Achtundsiebzig
Die Künstlerin und Autorin Pamela Colman Smith (von ihren Freunden Pixie genannt) schließt im Jahr 1909 die Arbeiten an einer Bildserie ab, für die sie heute weltberühmt ist: Ihre Illustrationen zieren die Karten des bekanntesten und am weitesten verbreiteten Tarot-Decks.
Das Kartenspiel wird im selben Jahr vom Verlag Rider&Son ohne Angabe der Autorin veröffentlicht. Pixie erhält für diese Arbeit von ihrem Auftraggeber, einem Okkultisten namens Arthur Edward Waite, einen unverschämt geringen Geldbetrag.
Von ihren 80 Werken zum Tarot sind 78 bekannt, zwei gelten als verschollen.
Heute zählen diese Grafiken zu den bedeutendsten Bildserien der Welt.
Seit ihrer Veröffentlichung wurden sie unzählige Male kopiert, weiterentwickelt, kontrovers diskutiert und auf völlig unterschiedliche, teilweise widersprüchliche Art gedeutet.
Sie inspirierten andere Künstler, dienen Wahrsagern als Handwerkszeug und wurden von Scharlatanen missbraucht.
Einige Menschen glauben, in ihnen den Spiegel eines spirituellen Reifungsprozesses erkennen zu können.
Pixies Tarotkarten berührten und berühren bis heute. Denn ihre intensive Bildsprache hat seit damals, vor über hundert Jahren, nichts von ihrer Faszination verloren.
Die Serie Achtundsiebzig ist eine fotografische Interpretation ausgewählter Karten des Tarots nach Waite und Smith.
